Stage 3: Ideate
Mind Map
Central question: How can we make a system to order lunch without taking away the human interactions students enjoy?
Value Proposition Workbook
User Context and Identification
- Who: A middle/high school student; they might encounter a long lunch line in a big school during lunch period
- Why: Students need lunch to fuel them for the rest of the day
- Status quo: By lining up directly in the line to get lunch where it's made
- Emotion: Boredom
Requirements Mapping
- Functional: Order lunch
- Social: There's no specific desired perception, but there's usually human interaction while standing in the lunch line and while requesting your food in person (that interaction is valuable for students)
- Emotional: Students want to feel content with the food they got
- Hire/Fire: The lunch line would be replaced by my solution
Pain Points and Friction
- Barrier: Not enough time during lunch
- Risk: Loss of valuable time
- Cost of Inaction: Students keep losing valuable time in the lunch period
- Ugly Truth: Students talk with friends to pass time or cut the long line, but both of these hardly do anything to remedy the true inefficiencies of a long lunch line
Benefit Identification
- Dream State: Ordering lunch takes minutes with no time wasted standing in line, and students are able to use their time wisely, to their own accord, rather than losing time in the lunch line
- Unexpected Delight: Save students' time, allowing them to prepare for what matters most rather than stand in line for lunch
- Success Metric: Minutes saved
- Value Pivot: The solution saves their time
Competitive Differentiation
- Only-ness: We are the only service that allow lunch orders at school for busy students because our service is remote.
- Trade-off: Losing some of the human interaction of the lunch line
- Evidence: Remote orders
- Radical Clarity: We allow orders online/remotely and students can wait while doing whatever they need to instead of being in line
“Our website helps students who want to order lunch quickly by getting rid of the lunch line and saving their time. Unlike current lunch lines, we allow students to order remotely so that they do not have to stand in line and can do other things, only requiring them to walk to the cafeteria in the end to pick up their lunch.”
Idea Prioritization
I have chosen to create a website rather than software for a kiosk or an app. This is because kiosks can be expensive, and apps can be really easy to make, but they might not be the most accessible across all devices (especially with device bans in some schools). On the other hand, a website can be accessed on school laptops and personal devices, and it is more flexible than an app for this reason.
