Introduction

Computers have changed the world in amazing ways. They help us in schools, businesses, hospitals, and even in our homes. But computers didn’t always look like the ones we use today. They have gone through many changes over time. Let’s look at how computers have developed from the beginning to the present.

Early Computers (Before 1900)

The first calculating tools were not electronic. One of the earliest was the Abacus, used thousands of years ago. In 1642, Blaise Pascal made the Pascaline, a mechanical calculator. Later, Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine, which is considered the first idea of a modern computer. Ada Lovelace, who worked with Babbage, is known as the first computer programmer.

First Generation (1940s - 1950s)

The first generation of computers used vacuum tubes. These computers were very large and used a lot of electricity. They were mostly used by governments and scientists for calculations. One famous example is ENIAC, one of the first electronic computers ever made.

Second Generation (1950s - 1960s)

In the second generation, transistors replaced vacuum tubes. This made computers smaller, faster, and cheaper. Programming languages like COBOL and FORTRAN were also created during this time. Computers became more useful for businesses and universities.

Third Generation (1960s - 1970s)

The third generation of computers used integrated circuits (ICs). These allowed many tiny electronic parts to fit on a small chip, making computers faster and more reliable. Operating systems were also developed, allowing several programs to run at once.

Fourth Generation (1970s - 1990s)

The fourth generation began with the invention of microprocessors. This made it possible to create personal computers. Companies like Apple, IBM, and Microsoft began producing computers for homes and offices. This was also the time when computer graphics, mice, and keyboards became common.

Fifth Generation (1990s - Today)

The fifth generation is based on artificial intelligence (AI) and very fast processors. Computers today are smaller, faster, and smarter than ever before. The Internet, smartphones, and cloud computing have changed the way people live and communicate.
