ASD Home Base
According to new CDC data, 1 in 44 children is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Home Base is a support model for our students who have an IEP and are on the autism spectrum.
The students in Home Base participate in general education MESH classes with grade level standards (unless they are participating in access point, they use those standards). I push in to those classes 3 days a week (for 7th grade) and the other 2 days our IA is there.
The Home Base students are also scheduled in my class for Learning Strategies and Social Emotional Learning (two periods). In the past two years the Home Base students have also been in Art and PE classes that are designed to meet their needs, not the same Art and PE classes as everyone else. PE is particularly difficult because of the sensory overload with the locker room and very large classes. Our IA goes to Art/PE with the students.
We are available to offer supports during lunch, if needed. Also, the majority of the teachers on the team have been trained to work with students with ASD.
