Homeless Shelter Tent Design Project

Problem Statement

Many homeless individuals lack access to reliable shelter that protects against rain, cold temperatures, and wind. Existing temporary shelters can be expensive, slow to set up, or require storage space. This project focuses on designing a 6 × 4 × 4 ft insulated tent that is affordable, weather-resistant, and easy to build using accessible materials.

Background Research

Research into emergency shelters shows that insulation and moisture control are two of the biggest factors in survival and comfort.

Materials Used

Foil-Backed Bubble Wrap

Provides thermal insulation for heat retention.

Construction Adhesive

Waterproof adhesive used to secure insulation.

Schedule 40 PVC Pipe

Lightweight, durable structural frame.

Heavy-Duty Tarp

Prevents moisture transfer from the ground.

Final Design

  1. Cut PVC pipes into frame lengths.
  2. Assemble base and top frame.
  3. Add vertical supports.
  4. Attach insulation panels.
  5. Install tarp flooring.
  6. Add ventilation and flap door.
